In late September 2024, Calum Glenny, the Avid Travellrer embarked on a whirlwind 72-hour journey to Madrid with buddies, starting with a dynamic, history-filled city expedition. Walking through dynamic squares, we immersed ourselves in the city's history and lively atmosphere.
Our group's varied choices led to various activities. Suzanne and Richard started the firstday one evening with a remarkable dinner at Bodega de los Secretos, a relaxing, centuries-old restaurant loaded with appeal. On day 2 my partner and I signed up with a tapas and white wine walking tour led by the passionate Mario. We went to several regional hotspots, consisting of a mushroom specialized bar and an Iberian delicatessen, while learning about Madrid's history and culture.
Day three was everything about cooking, with Pamela and Bill setting up a paella masterclass at the elegant Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez assisted us through the intricacies of making standard Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was paired with tastings of local sherries and wines, making it among the trip's highlights.
We settled the weekend with a see to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate place showcased the raw feeling and beauty of flamenco dancing, providing a best cultural capstone.
Throughout the journey, we took pleasure in extraordinary meals at regional restaurants like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we delighted in genuine Spanish dishes such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the famous calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, using a peek into Spain's rich culinary traditions.
